Beyond the Bedroom: Three Ways to Use an Antique Chest

A good chest of drawers can earn its place well beyond the bedroom. In an entry, dining room or living room, it gives everyday things somewhere to go and brings a little warmth to a space that might otherwise feel unfinished.

For this week's Fickle edit, we're looking at the French Louis XV walnut commode in our current collection. Its three drawers, shaped fronts and decorative metal pulls give you plenty to work with before you add a single accessory.

1. Give the entry a useful focal point

Try a chest where you might otherwise put a console. A small tray can keep keys together, while the drawers offer a place for the things you prefer out of sight. Keep the top simple: one lamp or a favorite object, with room left over to set something down.

Measure the passage around it before you fall in love with the arrangement. This chest is listed at 53.5 inches wide, 25.75 inches deep and 35 inches high. Mark that footprint on the floor and allow extra room for drawers to open without blocking a doorway or walkway.

2. Make room for dining linens

A chest in the dining room can be a useful alternative to a long sideboard. Think folded napkins, placemats and the smaller pieces you reach for when setting the table. Check the interior drawer measurements against what you intend to store; the outside dimensions won't tell you whether a particular serving piece fits.

Let the walnut and hardware set the tone. A simple bowl or a single framed picture above the chest can keep the arrangement from competing with the drawer fronts. Protect the surface from wet glasses, hot dishes and spills.

The drawer fronts and hardware bring detail to the room without needing a crowded display above.

3. Bring closed storage into the living room

If open shelves have become a little too busy, a chest can give the room a quieter spot. Consider it along a wall for smaller household items, with a lamp or artwork above. Pairing warm wood with plain upholstery lets the chest stand out without making the whole room feel formal.

Before choosing a place, check drawer movement, interior condition and the route the piece will take into your home. Ask about any repairs or details you'd like to see more closely. Those practical questions matter just as much as the view from across the room.
