An antique urn that recalls the ancient tradition of ‘smammriato’ - where artisans, in order to conceal defects from enamelling, dripped an additional color on the surface using small branches, especially bunches of thyme or from olive trees, as a brush. This unique technique means each piece is one of a kind. The historic example, dating back to the early 1900s, would have been originally used for storing the mother yeast for a family. The wonderful item with its energetic feel due to the splatter effect and deep green color against an ivory base, can be used as a vase for flowers or as a decorative display piece.
These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. They were often stored in cool, dark places and the porous nature of the clay helped to maintain moisture in the jar, which was beneficial for the yeast. The jars also helped to prevent mould and bacteria from spoiling the yeast, as the porous nature of terra cotta allowed air to flow into the jar while still retaining moisture, allowing any excess moisture to evaporate.
