Choosing a Mirror: Scale, Shape, and the View It Reflects

You find a mirror you love, then get home and realize the wall is smaller than you remembered. Or the frame fits beautifully, but the reflection is mostly a doorway and a ceiling fan. A little planning before you buy makes all the difference.

Here are three mirrors from Fickle International Antiques at The White Barn, each with a different scale and silhouette. Use them to think through your own room before choosing a favorite.

Start with the wall, then look at the reflection

Measure the available width and height, including the space around nearby furniture, light switches, and door trim. Make a paper outline of the mirror’s full dimensions and hold it in place. Include the crest and frame, not just the glass.

Next, stand where you will usually see it. What sits across the room? A window, artwork, or an attractive corner can make a lovely reflection. A mirror also repeats whatever you would rather not notice, so check the view from both seated and standing positions.

A small round mirror for a quieter spot

Our Round Pub Mirror has a circular mirrored border with small decorative details. The rounded outline offers a nice change of shape beside rectangular pictures or straight-lined furniture.

Round Pub Mirror: $595 USD. Listed dimensions: 20 inches wide × 19 inches high × 1 inch deep.

Try a piece this size on a smaller wall or as part of a carefully spaced grouping. If it is going above a wide chest, make the paper outline first: a small mirror may need companion artwork to give the arrangement the presence you want.

An urn crest that deserves breathing room

The Gold Gilded Louis Philipe Mirror with Urn Motif brings a tall outline, rounded upper corners, and an ornamental crest into the room. The urn and curling decoration are part of the attraction, so leave enough clear wall above and beside them to enjoy their shape.

Gold Gilded Louis Philipe Mirror with Urn Motif: $2,395 USD. Listed dimensions: 32 inches wide × 54 inches high.

For a simple arrangement, let the frame provide the detail and keep nearby objects low. If you are pairing it with a console, compare their actual widths rather than judging from separate photographs. Check the combined height of the furniture, your intended gap, and the full mirror.

Measure twice for a statement-scale mirror

The Large Gilded Mirror has an elaborate crest and hanging garland decoration. At 85.5 inches high, it calls for a very different plan from a small wall mirror.

Large gilded rectangular mirror with an elaborate raised crest, garland decoration, and an ornamental lower frame.
Large Gilded Mirror: $3,750 USD. Listed dimensions: 43 inches wide × 85.5 inches high × 1.5 inches deep.

Check ceiling height and the route into the room, including turns, stairs, and doorways. A large mirror needs a secure installation appropriate to its weight, frame, and wall construction. Discuss mounting or anti-tip requirements with a qualified installer rather than assuming it can safely lean against a wall.

Before you make it yours

  • Ask for close-ups. Look at the glass, frame corners, crest, back, and any repairs.
  • Confirm the details that matter. Ask about weight, mounting hardware, condition, and any dimensions not given in the listing.
  • Plan the move. Confirm transport arrangements before purchasing, especially for a large or delicate frame.
  • Keep the room in mind. Save a photograph of the wall and the measurements of the furniture below it.
